Overview

Walmart Pharmacy is the third largest pharmacy in the United States, with over 4,000 stores. Stores are within 10 miles of 90% of people in the nation, which makes affordable health services accessible to the majority of Americans. Current offerings include prescriptions, health clinic services, and immunizations.

In 2020, the world faced an unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. With the ongoing pandemic and flu season quickly approaching, reducing the spread of the flu is crucial to maintaining good health and decreasing burdens on medical resources. CDC has distributed 87.5 million doses of flu vaccine to meet the estimated increased demand, with a fraction of that to be administered by Walmart Pharmacy.

The project below aims to provide preventative healthcare through a fast, intuitive, and contact-less signup process.

Role

For this project, I led product design and research for customer experiences.

From concept to handoff, I designed brand new end-to-end experiences for customer-facing apps. After a collaborative design research kickoff, I wrote the moderation script and moderated pilots and studies for 12 participants. In total, I collaborated with a cross-functional team of 60+ people across 4 time zones.

Challenge

Support increased demand

With the increased focus on healthcare due to COVID-19, Walmart Pharmacy expects an increased demand for flu shots during flu season in 2020. As a result, Walmart Pharmacy aims to scale up services to meet this demand.

Help customers save time

Previously, flu shots existed as an in-person service requiring long waiting times and heavy paper forms. The goal of this project is to offer a brand new digital flu shot booking service and allow patients to fill out health forms in their own time, making it quick and easy once they arrive at the pharmacy.

Result Snapshot

Customers are saving ~20 min. and associates are saving about 14 min. of process and wait times.

The scheduler is available for more than 4,700 Walmart pharmacies across the country.
